About me

I have a split role between the School of Health and Social Wellbeing and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West (ARC West). At ARC West I am co-theme lead for Training and Capacity Building and manage a programme of training in research skills and evaluation for the workforce in health and social care organisations in the West of England. At UWE, I currently supervise dissertation students on the MSc Public Health and Environmental Health and am co-module leader for the Health Protection module (MSc Public Health). I also teach research methods and evidence-based practice to school nurses and health visitors studying public health nursing and have previously taught large numbers of undergraduate nurses and other health professionals at UWE. In the past my research has focused on medical education especially GP education, and health services research. More recently I have conducted evaluations of research capacity building initiatives.

Area of expertise

I am passionate about evidence-based approaches to healthcare practice and policy and seek to influence the evidence culture in health and social care organisations by helping staff to understand, use and carry out research. Building on experience of both quantitative and qualitative methods, my current research focus is on developing methodologies for evaluating the impact of research and capacity building initiatives.
