Professor David Evans

Area of expertise

David is Professor in Health Services Research (Public Involvement). His research interests focus on public involvement in health, including involvement in research. David is currently leading People in Health West of England, a collaborative initiative on public involvement in research with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC West), the West of England Academic Health Science Network, the Clinical Research Network West of England and Bristol Health Partners ( He was principal investigator on a study on public involvement in research for the NIHR Health Services & Delivery Research programme. He previously led the national evaluation of patient advice and liaison services for the Policy Research Programme. David is on the editorial board of Research, Involvement and Engagement (
Prior to joining UWE Bristol, David was one of the first English directors of public health from a background other than medicine. He has research interests in public health leadership, community involvement and capacity building and is on the editorial board of Critical Public Health (
David acts as a director of studies for postgraduate students and has experience of internal and external doctoral examination.
