Ed Cape is a former practising solicitor who specialises in criminal justice.

Area of expertise

Ed Cape is an internationally known researcher in the field of criminal justice, and is also the author of a range of practitioner texts. He has recently completed two research projects examining effective criminal defence in Europe, and an empirical study of the rights of suspects police custody in four European jurisdictions. He is currently engaged in similar research in Latin America and Eastern Europe. Ed wrote Improving Pretrial Justice: The Roles of Lawyers and Paralegals for the Open Society Foundations, and a handbook on early access to legal aid, commissioned by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, has recently been published. Publications for legal practitioners include Defending Suspects at Police Stations, and Ed contributes to Blackstone's Criminal Practice, and also writes case commentaries for Criminal Law Review.
