About me

Jenny Rintoul teaches Visual Culture to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Arts (in the College of Arts, Technology and Environment [CATE]), and supervises doctoral researchers. She runs the level 5 undergradute Visual Culture module, Creative Analysis, which is a large cross-disciplinary module for students from all art and design programmes in the School.

Jenny leads the Visual Culture Research Group (VCRG), a cross-disciplinary group of creative practitioners, makers and writers interested in visualities and materialities (https://vcrg.co.uk/). Jenny is a member of the WoW (Ways of Writing in art & design) research network. She is a Board Member of the CATE Research Ethics Committee and an Assessment Offence Advisor for art & design.

Jenny is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice, and peer reviews for several international journals. Jenny is an External Examiner and an External Advisor for Critical & Contextual Studies.

Jenny's current research interests are in two strands: iconography of the Nursing Virgin in relation to maternal femininities, and art and design education. Her research on art and design education focusses on Visual Culture/Critical and Contextual Studies pedagogies, including relationships between making and writing, embodied knowledges, and the reification of 'intuition' and 'integration'. Her monograph published by Routledge includes proposals for integrating Critical and Contextual Studies with studio practice through their curricula separation from one another.
