Dr Jennifer Hill

About me

Jenny studied for her undergraduate degree in geography at St Anne’s College, Oxford University and for her PhD (in biogeography) at Swansea University. She also holds a PG Cert. HE from UWE, Bristol. She taught at the Universities of Worcester and Exeter before moving to UWE, Bristol in 1997. Jenny is passionate about teaching and researching in geography and cognate disciplines. She has held the roles of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Deputy Head of Department and Associate Head of Department (Research & Scholarship) during her time at UWE.  Jenny is currently an Associate Professor, University Learning and Teaching Fellow and an HEA National Teaching Fellow. She is a registered HEA Academic Associate and GA Consultant.
Jenny teaches at Undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels, and she acts as external examiner for undergraduate programmes and PhD theses. After winning her NTF in 2011 she was featured in the first ‘Teaching Intelligence’ report of Times Higher Education (13 October 2011, pp. 22-23).
Jenny extends her interest of biogeography into the water. She is a PADI qualified advanced open water diver and under water naturalist. She has dived a number of sites in the Great Barrier Reef, the Caribbean, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Area of expertise

Jenny currently researches into the areas of environmental resource management and pedagogy. Jenny has published 78 journal articles and book chapters and 3 co-edited books. She has delivered 86​​ national/international conference presentations and 58 invited presentation/workshops in the HE, school and public sectors. Her Google Scholar h-index is 17 and she has approximately 1,200 citations. Her research has been funded by  ESRC, HEA and Forest Research.
In support of her research, Jenny is a Chartered Geographer (CGeog), a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) (FRGS), Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), Member of the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) and Member of the International Network for Learning and Teaching Geography in HE (INLT).
Jenny has chaired the RGS-IBG Higher Education Research Group and is currently a member of the International Editorial Boards for Journal of Geography in Higher Education and Higher Education Pedagogies. She is a former member of the Editorial Collective for Geography and Editor-in-Chief of Planet.

Jenny has undertaken a number of national roles including serving on the QAA Review Panel for the Geography Subject Benchmark Statement, NERC Peer Review college, HEA National Teaching Fellowships and ISSOTL Annual Conferences. She is an invited member of the HEA Assessment and Feedback Community of Practice and the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) Steering Group.
