About me

Dr Janet Ige is a seasoned academic and researcher. Until Autumn 2023, she served as the co-programme leader on the BSc Public Health Degree Apprenticeship programme, showcasing her leadership and commitment to fostering educational excellence.

Formerly leading the health protection module on the MSc Public Health programme, Janet has transitioned to new roles, including a more significant focus on research expertise. Her recent accomplishments include completing her doctoral studies and gaining recognition as a reviewer for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

In her extensive research career, Janet has delved into projects exploring the intricate relationships between the physical and social environment and their impact on health outcomes. Her work, emphasising non-communicable diseases, utilizes realist evaluation, systematic review, and meta-analysis methods. Notably, Janet played a pivotal role in the public health work stream for the UPSTREAM project funded by the Wellcome Trust and contributed as a project researcher for a Public Health England funded initiative, the Healthy People Healthy Places evidence tool.

While maintaining her commitment to research, Janet retains a strong interest in promoting physical activity, particularly among socio-economically disadvantaged groups. Her doctoral research focused on understanding the barriers and facilitators of physical activity among the Somali population in Bristol.

As an accomplished educator, Janet continues to contribute significantly to teaching on the prestigious BSc Public Health Degree Apprenticeship, MSc Public Health and other postgraduate programmes. Her lecture portfolio encompasses a diverse range of courses, including Epidemiology of non-communicable diseases and Evidence synthesis. Beyond teaching, Janet is actively involved in supervising Master's level dissertations and providing pastoral support.

Janet's dedication to academia, coupled with her extensive research and teaching experience, has earned her recognition in the first and second editions of the Celebrating Excellence booklet consecutively. Her multifaceted contributions reflect a commitment to advancing public health knowledge and fostering academic excellence.
