John Paul Dowling holds an MA in Interactive Media from the University of Limerick and a BA(Hons) Graphic Design from Limerick School of Art & Design, Ireland. He teaches across all levels on BA(Hons) Graphic Design here at UWE and infrequently on the MA Graphic Arts. He is heavily involved in typography both in his own practice and in education. He is a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers. His work in typographic research, education and as a practitioner has been recognised in various capacities by ISTD, AtypI, SOTA and TypeCon 2011: Surge, New Orleans, 2014: Capitolized, Washington D.C.
He has previously lectured in Graphic Design at Limerick School of Art & Design and is currently a visiting lecturer to a number of national and international design institutions.
John Paul has exhibited work at Ink-dot, Bristol, 2011/2009; The European Design Awards 2008 and E+VA International 2006/2003. His book design has received favourable reviews in The Irish Times Book Review and a number of leading industry websites. He has recently completed three books titled 'Al-Mutanabbi — Burning Daylight' for An Inventory Of Al-Mutanabbi Street a collaboration of some 200+ international book artists. A complete set of all the books will be donated to the Iraq National Library in Baghdad. The other two sets are touring internationally for the next few years.
In September 2013, John Paul was appointed Education Director of the International Society of Typographic Designers.
He has worked full-time at UWE since 2008.
