Dr Kamran Soomro

Bio

I am an Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the School of Computing and Creative Technologies at UWE Bristol. I hold a Bachelors and a PhD in Computer Science and have over 10 years experience in research and academia. My research interests include use of ICT technologies for smart cities and urban management, knowledge management, artificial intelligence, big data and natural language processing.

Research

My expertise also includes distributed systems such as grids and clouds. I have experience in installing and maintaining Hadoop, Spark and Storm clusters amongst other distributed technologies such as Docker. I have also been involved in the EU FP7 neuGRID, urbanAPI, DECUMANUS, and H2020 Smarticipate projects. I am currently part of the HEU GREENGAGE project in which I am leading software requirements management and evaluation. Besides these projects I have also worked on a collaborative project funded under the British Council Newton Institution Links Programme with Taylors' University in Malaysia.

I have also led a KTP involving machine learning as well as other research projects in the same area.

I have also worked as a Data Scientist with the NHS which has allowed me to work on a number of projects focusing on the improvement of quality of patient care.

I am an active member of the EPSRC Peer Review College.

Teaching

On the academia side I have taught various courses such as Databases, Web Programming, Principles of Computing and Web Security as well as supervised around 50 undergraduate and Masters projects. I am currently teaching courses on Data Mining and Data Visualisation in Business Intelligence.

I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Leadership

Besides successfully leading a number of research projects and tasks as well as undergraduate and postgraduate module teams I am involved in both the UWE Womens' Research Mentoring Scheme (WRMS) and Elevate Mentoring schemes as a mentor.
