About me
Olena Doran is Professor in Biomedical Research and Dean in Research and Enterprise. She obtained her BSc+MSc (Distinction) and PhD in Biology from Kharkov State University, Ukraine. As a recipient of the European Fellowship Fund, she worked for 2 years at the Nenski Institute of Experimental Biology, Poland. In 1998 Olena was awarded the Royal Society/NATO Fellowship to study the mechanism of cytochrome c release during apoptosis at the University of Bristol, where she worked for 10 years (the last 5 years as a Head of Research Unit). Her main research interests are: (i) genetics and molecular mechanisms of pathological states and food quality traits and (ii) the development of novel technologies for food quality and food safety. In 2008 Olena took a post of Director of Research Development at the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology, University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol. Between 2010-2017 she led the Centre for Research in Biosciences as the Centre Director, in 2017 Olena became Associate Dean in Research and Enterprise at the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, and since 2022 she is a Dean in Research and Enterprise, College of Health, Science and Society, UWE, Bristol. Olena's research has been supported by externally funded grants of total value in excess of £6m from BBSRC, Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, EU, Industry and other competitive funding bodies. Olena has over 130 publications and 5 patents. She has been leading international initiatives and networks including UK/China Partnership on Novel Technologies, European Association for Animal Production Working Group; acting as a member or Scientific Reviewer for Research Councils and funding bodies in the UK, New Zealand, Belgium and Canada, has been involved in a number of EU COST initiatives and has been the University Lead for such strategic initiatives as Bristol Health Partners, Academic Reserach Collaborations, Academic Research Science Network and a member of the Board of Governors, Bristol Zoological Society. Olena has established and developed collaborations and partnerships with over 100 universities, Research Institutes and industrial companies in the UK, across Europe, China, Malaysia and USA.
