About me

I am a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for BSc Geography, based in the School of Architecture and Environment.

In 2023 I was awarded my PhD for a thesis which explores the spatio-temporal influence of atmospheric circulations on hydroclimate within Great Britain. Prior to this I completed my undergraduate BSc Geography and Environmental Management and Masters by Research (MRes) in Remote Sensing at UWE. I also hold a PgCert in Academic Practice.

My specialism is within the field of applied spatial analysis, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing. I primarily teach on our undergraduate degrees in geography and environmental management covering GIS and Remote Sensing, sustainable resource management, hazard and disaster management, meteorology, and coastal processes/management. I am also involved in fieldwork activities.

During my time at UWE I have been awarded multiple Staff Excellence and Student Experience Awards.

External to UWE I am currently the Secretary of the Geography and Education Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), and Treasurer of the Bristol Branch of the Geographical Association. I am also on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education and International Journal for Students as Partners.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and a Member of the Institute of Environmental Science (MIEnvSc). I am a member of various international institutions including the European Geosciences Union, British Hydrological Society, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, and the International Network for Learning & Teaching in Geography.

Area of expertise

I have a particular disciplinary interest in hydrology and water resources management. My Doctorate combined my interests in GIS/spatial analysis with this field and quantified the spatio-temporal relationships between large atmospheric systems and meteorological and hydrological conditions in Britain. I am also interested in research regarding remote sensing for water resources and environmental management. I have been involved in several CPD/capacity building workshops for professionals in the developing/majority world. Recent courses have been delivered in South Africa and Morocco in partnership with UNESCO-IHP.

More broadly I am interested in the application of GIS and Remote Sensing to a wider range of disciplinary areas. I have undertaken research exploring spatial patterns in Airbnb listings, and the relationship between Green-Blue-Grey infrastructure and quality of life in Bristol.

Alongside my disciplinary research I actively undertake research and scholarship into geographical education and higher education pedagogies. I have been involved in projects which have explored the potential of dialogic feed-forward, how we work with students in partnership, understanding perceptions of language used in assessment, and the impact of the pandemic on teaching and learning.
