About me

Dr Ian Wilson is currently a senior lecturer in the department of Biomedical, Biological and Analytical Sciences (BBAS) in the faculty of Health and Applied Sciences (HAS) at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. Ian graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Plant Sciences from the University of Nottingham in 1987 and with a PhD in the molecular biology of cold-induced pome fruit ripening in 1991. After gaining post-doctoral research experience at Michigan State University in the USA, he returned to Nottingham University in 1994 to take up a research/teaching fellowship. Thereafter, in 1998 he moved in a research capacity to the University of Malaya in Malaysia and then returned to the UK in 2000 as a BBSRC research fellow at Long Ashton Research Station. In 2004 he moved to Bristol University where he continued as a BBSRC research fellow and finally moved to take up his current position at UWE in 2007.

Ian has his main research interests within the molecular biology and molecular genetics of the cell signalling that underpins a number of key developmental and physiological aspects of plant development and the responses of plants to alterations in their environment. He has been party to grant funded income in excess of £2 million either as a contributing author, co-applicant or principle investigator and has published widely in both peer reviewed journals and books.

Along with teaching in the biological sciences field, Ian contributes a number of programme and management roles within his department and is currently the manager for the Premedical Sciences programme.

Area of expertise

I have long standing interest in the cell signalling that accompanies fruit ripening and also the responses of plants to environmental stress and have engaged numerous molecular biology and functional genomics approaches in research aimed at furthering these interests.
