About me
Jane is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology. She joined UWE in 2015 after completing her PhD at the University of Queensland. Prior to this, Jane was a Senior Lecturer at the University of South Wales for nearly ten years. She has also taught at the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Cardiff University, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Social Science Research Methods.
Area of expertise
My research areas focus upon the intersections between gender, sex, sexuality(ies) and social control, and more widely relate to social divisions, marginalised identities, crime, victimisation and justice. My PhD focused upon sex work, interrogating the gendered dimensions of the ‘whore stigma’. Key to the research was the extent to which differently gendered sex workers internalised and/or developed strategies to manage and resist stigma, and whether this was mediated by the experience of stigma(s) other than and/or in addition to the whore stigma (such as racism, homophobia, transphobia and so on).
In addition, I have conducted and managed research projects concerning a variety of topics, including: community regeneration; street violence; anti-social behaviour; homelessness; homicide; domestic abuse; and sex work. In addition, I have published in the areas of child homicide, prisoner resettlement and the use of sexually explicit material in the HE classroom.
