About me

Since completing a degree in Design Arts, Kate has worked across a broad range of design platforms and creative practice; the common thread being the utilizing of image and/or text to instruct, inform and entertain. Kate’s career has combined design and making skills in many areas including set design, medical photography, freelance photography, web and TV interactivity, Public Art and print-based design. Working with clients in the public, corporate and entertainment industries, which have included major blue-chip brands; (Sony Music, Orange, Philips, Columbia Tri-Star, Warner Brothers, Peugeot) Kate created multiple award winning work for the BBC designing the digital provision supporting David Attenborough’s landmark series ‘The Life of Mammals’.

Area of expertise

Kate’s professional practice encompasses a wide breadth of creative processes from construction through to physical application and outputs. In relation to design practice, this has included a strong portfolio of work within the area of screen based and interactive design; designing projects that include full e-commerce transactional web businesses, digital marketing, developing user interfaces for e-banking and designing audience tailored content for Interactive web/ TV broadcast for the BBC.

 

Kate’s recent practice has evolved to include Public Art commissions, for NESTA Futurelab; Space Signpost - ‘Welcome to the Neighborhood’’ a multimedia touch-screen project for virtual and real time exploration of the solar system] permanently located in Millennium Square in Bristol’s Harbourside. For UWE; as one half of the design collaboration ‘KRAS’, Kate designed the neon artworks welcoming you to the Bower Ashton campus and the new building; ‘Think Place’ - 5 x architectural text-based neon site specific statements relating to arts education. Alongside lecturing, Kate undertakes freelance photographic commissions that include augmenting physical spaces with large-scale photographic artworks.

 

As a Senior Lecturer at UWE, Kate teaches into all levels of the Graphic Design programme; and has previously taught into the BA Photography course for a number of years. Kate takes particular responsibility for the development and delivery of the screen based curriculum, embracing new technologies that can be integrated into design practice. Kate curates the course Vimeo channels which contain work created by the students on the BA Graphic Design Programme, its aims are to support student learning and act as an online platform to promote screen based work within the degree programme. Kate and is an advocate of the creative practitioner being well rounded, experienced in multi-disciplinary and collaborative practice.
