About me

Nick is an associate head of department in Geography and Environmental Management and leads the UWE Bristol Planning School. His research and teaching interests centre on strategic planning and the delivery of infrastructure and major projects. Within this element he is particularly interested in the enhancement and protection of green and blue infrastructures. He has recently started a PhD that is seeking to explore the delivery of GI through major residential development. 

Between 2018 and 2019 Nick was involved with a research project on smart energy funded by the RTPI South West. This was progressed in collaboration with Regen, The Landmark Practice and Pell Frischmann.​

Nick has co-authored a study skills book for town and country planning students with Adam Sheppard (2013), a colleague within the same department at UWE. More recently he has co-written an introductory book on planning that is presented as a Short Guide to Town and Country Planning. It was published by the Policy Press in 2019.

Area of expertise

He is a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and is active at a both a national and regional  (south west) level. In 2013 Nick acted as regional chair. He is also a member of the Town and Country Planning and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. 

Through 2019 he was actively involved with the development of the Town Planning Degree Apprenticeship, with UWE Bristol being one of the key front-runners. Nick is Chair of the RTPI / University of the Sheffield Partnership Board and Vice-Chair of the RTPI / University of Ulster Partnership Board. He is Vice Chair of the Partnerships and Accreditation Panel, and a member of the RTPI's national Education and Lifelong Learning Committee. He also serves on the RTPI's General Assembly. He also has experience of external examining in the urban planning field. Nick is committed to delivering a positive student experience and has been rewarded for his efforts during his time at the university.
