About me

I teach theory relating to youth culture and popular music, on BA Media Culture & Practice and BA Media & Journalism, with a particular interest in questions of cultural identity and ethnicity.

Area of expertise

My research interests are broadly concerned with the study of cultural identity and ethnicity in relation to range of popular texts, including music, film and literature. I have written extensively on questions of cultural identity and ethnicity in relation to subcultures and popular music, with a particular focus on music and locality. I am co-founder of BLIMA (Bristol Live Independent Music Archive) which documents the everyday experiences of nightlife and musical culture in Bristol and recent research in this area has been developed as part of the Goethe Institute's Ten Cities project (http://blog.goethe.de/ten-cities/).

My current research is concerned with portrayals of violence and otherness in colonial and post-colonial fiction with a particular focus on the representation of Thuggee in popular literature, film and television.
