About me

I have been a full-time senior lecturer in journalism at UWE since August 2013. Prior to this I worked  in international television news for over 20 years for Reuters Television (RTV), Sky News and latterly at Associated Press Television (APTN) as its Europe and Africa Editor.

In 2013 I was awarded a PhD for my thesis 'Accounting for News: A discourse analysis of the talk of television journalists' from Cardiff University. My research looks at the construction of news values and news work in contemporary British television news through an examination of the discourse of industry practitioners from the BBC, Channel 4, Sky News, Reuters Television and Associated Press Television News.

Previously I have taught journalism and communications on BA and MA courses at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC) at Cardiff University and Bath Spa University.

I currently teach journalism ethics and media law to Masters and UG students on the Journalism and Media Production degrees. I have also taught modules on Activism and the Media, Global Journalism, Journalism Futures, Journalism Dissertation and Research Methods.

My research interests include Court Reporting and Open Justice working on a number of projects with colleagues from UWE Law Department; representations of adopted families; journalism education and professional identity.

Since 2020 I have been the Chair of the ACE Faculty Research Ethics Committee (FREC)
