About me

I have taught in a number of HE institutions including the Universities of Bournemouth and Gloucestershire, and have been at UWE since 2007.  My academic background is in American culture but since 1997 I have focused on Television Studies, initially focussing on TV talk shows and representations of selfhood. Since then I have researched in areas of TV drama that include the shifting representations of mental illness, the health service in the UK, women and ageing, and TV audiences' use of second screens, social media and companion apps. I have also researched in the area of television history.

I have been fortunate to collaborate with colleagues in a number of UK and European universities on a number of projects, and am a member of the Southern Broadcasting History Group (see https://southernbhg.wordpress.com/), and worked on the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)-funded project No Such Things As Society?  I am also a founding of  Women, Ageing and Media (WAM) based at the University of Gloucestershire (see http://wamuog.co.uk/) which secured an AHRC Networking Grant in order to bring together scholars and practitioners from across the globe to study the relationship between older women as consumers, producers and subjects of popular media.

I have supervised a number of PhD candidates in areas including masculinity in soap opera and American TV drama, ageing femininity and sexuality in film, queer identity in reality TV; I am currently supervising PhD research in independent TV production companies in the UK, and young people's responses to online and TV news in Jordan.

Area of expertise

Television broadcasting, gender, sexuality, mental health and illness.
