About me

I studied for my doctorate in Sociology at Warwick (1994-99). Previously, I completed my first degree in Sociology at Plymouth (1988-91), before going on to study for my Masters in Philosophy and Social Theory  at Warwick (1994-95).

I began my academic career as Tutor in Sociology at the University of Plymouth (1991-94). After that, I took up the post of Temporary Lecturer in Sociology at Leeds Metropolitan University (2001-01). I moved on to the University of Edinburgh on another fixed-term contract (2001-02), where I assumed the role of leadership of Second Year Sociology Undegraduate Studies.
I have taught at UWE since 2003, where I am currently (since 2018/19) Prgramme Leader in Sociology and module leader for the third-year optional course Contemporary Critiques of Modern Society and for the first-year core Introduction to Criminological Theory course.
My most recent published research output has sought to sociologize the COVID-19 pandemic and to develop a sociology of pandemics that understands these as products of modern social systems. These matters are explored in a trio of books: The Pandemic in Britain (2023), Modernity and the Pandemic (2023), and Contagion Capitalism (2023). My previous published output was situated on the terrain of philosophy and critical social theory and was concerned especially with exploring the relationship between sociologicl materialism and critical realism
