About me

I have been  Director: Research and Enterprise in the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology at UWE for nine years.  In this role, I bring together interdisciplinary teams from academia and industry to solve important current challenges in bio-sensing;  primarily in the medical, security and agri-food fields. My own research interests are in (i) integrated Microsystems for bio-sensing with particular interests in sample pre-processing (ii) the use of Raman spectroscopy as a sensing and characterisation technique and (iii) the development of sensors to measure volatile compounds down to the part per billion level.
My work has been highly interdisciplinary in nature and I take particular pleasure in bringing together teams of physicists, chemists, biologist, clinicians and mathematicians from academia and   industry together with end users, e.g. clinicians and patients, to bid for and subsequently undertake significant projects. My own expertise is centred on the physical sciences, i.e. chemistry, nanotechnology, spectrocopy, physics and materials but also bridges the gap to the life sciences.
I have been a technical leader in government, industry and at UWE for over thirty five years leading research and development of solutions to a wide range of problems, including (i) how to manufacture silicon devices with critical dimensions of a few nanometers, (ii) how to make silicon emit light, (iii) the detection of gases at very low concentrations and (iv) lab on a chip systems to rapidly detect chemical and biological materials.
I am a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and have published over 60 papers (h factor – 26) and 13 patent applications.
