About me

Registered midwife now lecturing in midwifery and researching. I am passionate about women-centred care and how to encourage holistic practice in the modern NHS.

Aware of the rise in medical intervention in childbirth, without the commensurate improvement in outcomes, I am curious about digging deeper into our conceptualisation of risk and medical intervention.

Recent interests include examining the complexities of ethnicity, risk assessments and racial bias,  feminist analysis of risk in maternity care, pathologising difference, and the role of screening and monitoring. I write for both peer-reviewed midwifery journals and the feminist quarterly, The Radical Notion.

I am part of the Cherish research project stakeholder group developing an on-line tool to bring health care professional's and women's understanding of risk and decision making together.

I have two children and live in Bristol.

Area of expertise

Intersectional feminist analysis of maternity care. The risk discourse in maternity care. History and social context of continous fetal electronic monitoring. Supporting physiological birth.
