About me

Chris Brown is an experienced journalist and academic, specialising his research in the development of sustainable business models in journalism. He has worked as a senior journalist at the likes of BBC News Online and The Independent, specifically developing and championing digital storytelling skills and formats. In 2009 he launched the award-winning independent online news website Bristol24-7. He subsequently worked with local partnerships to develop the business into a Community Interest Company whose mission, over the last decade, has been to build a community around independent journalism, create opportunities for young people and celebrate Bristol’s diversity through storytelling.
Since 2017 he has been a senior lecturer in digital journalism at the University of the West of England, and led the MA Journalism programme since 2021 - becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the same year. Working closely with senior editors at BBC Bristol, he has developed the training of journalism students in the latest digital storytelling techniques, ensuring they are fully equipped to enter modern, and rapidly-changing, newsrooms across the country.
His research interests cover the development of sustainable business models for journalism at a local level.
