About me

Dr Dominic Hames is a Senior Lecturer in the Civil Engineering cluster at the University of the West of England and has over 35 years of experience in flood and coastal defence related work both within the consultant and academic sector.

Dominic joined the University of the West of England in 2023 where he teaches on several modules across all degree programmes, including Project and Risk Management, Civil and Environmental Engineering Field Study, Hydraulics and Engineering Applications, Strategic Issues in Engineering and Coastal Engineering.

Prior to joining the University, Dominic worked for HR Wallingford where he worked on a number of high-profile projects.  These included:

  • He was part of the project team for the State of the Nation project to assess the coastal flood risk for the England following the winter 2013/14 floods, as well as the National flood risk assessment for England and Wales from 2008 until 2020.
  • He was part of the project team that worked on the UK's first Climate Change Risk Assessment (2012), and was the lead or co-author of several reports, including the main Evidence report presented to Parliament.
  • Dominic led the development of the prototype overtopping tool used in the State of the Nation flood risk assessment and was a co-author of a paper on this methodology that won the ICE Bill Curtin Medal for Research and Innovation in 2018.
  • In 2016 Dominic led the development of new Foundation, BSc and MSc degree programmes in Flood and Coastal Engineering at Brunel University that were run in conjunction with staff from HR Wallingford.
  • Dominic was also involved in some of the most significant coastal projects in recent years.  He carried out the flood risk assessment for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, as well as the options appraisal for the new seawall at Dawlish following its spectacular failure in 2014.

Dominic is a reviewer on several journals, and prior to joining UWE, was a visiting lecturer in flood risk management at the University of Brunel, the University of East London and IHE Delft.  Apart from winning the Bill Curtin Medal for Research and Innovation in 2018, Dominic also won the Halcrow Prize for the best paper in the ICE Maritime journal in 2020 and 2021.

Dominic also publishes extensively in a range of subjects across several different publications.  His first book, a political biography, was published in November 2023.
