Ismail is a professor of accounting in the department of Accounting Economics and Finance, Bristol Business School, Faculty of Business and Law, University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, UK.  My expertise is in the areas of corporate governance, corporate disclosure and accountability and firm performance.

I joined the University of the West of England in August 2013 having previously worked as a Lecturer and then as a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at De Montfort University (DMU) between 2007 and 2013. I was responsible for several undergraduate and postgraduate modules at DMU and coordinated research activities in the department. Since joining UWE, I have been involved with teaching accounting and finance modules across levels. I am also in charge of the research activities in accounting and finance. I served as the Accounting and Finance cluster leader in the Bristol Centre for Economics and Finance and currently serve as the Group Leader for the Governance and Accountability Research Group.  I serve on a number of Faculty and University committees. I have convened several successful international and national research conferences and seminars and I have served on the scientific committee of many conferences.

My research has appeared in leading journals in Accounting and Finance including in the International Journal of Accounting, Accounting Forum, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Applied Accounting Research, Accounting Research Journal and the International Journal of Managerial Finance. I serve on the Editorial Board of several accounting and finance journals and I am an Associate Editor with the Journal of Applied Accounting research.

I work closely with the industry and my research ideas and approaches add value to industry partners.  I have built a large network of research collaboration with colleagues from other institutions and industry. In 2017, working with other colleagues, I produced a research report on the value of Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to SMEs. This report highlights the invaluable roles of the NEDs to the performance and development of small and medium size enterprises.  In 2020, I gave an invited talk on Research in the UK to academics at the Guangdong Peizheng College, Guangdong, China.

I am passionate about postgraduate studies and I have supervised several masters and doctoral candidates successfully many of whom have taken up academic position and senior leadership positions in academia and industry.
