About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Digital Forensics and Cyber Security at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).

Prior to joining UWE I worked as a digital forensic investigator for six years in both private and public sectors. The majority of this time was spent with Gwent Police Hi-Tech Crime Unit (HTCU). My primary responsibilities involved the forensic acquisition, preservation, analysis, and reporting of digital evidence recovered from all electronic devices submitted to the unit in relation to criminal investigations.

I have worked on over two hundred criminal cases as the lead forensic examiner, incorporating numerous offenses/scenarios including child exploitation, grooming, indecent images of children, murder, the supply of controlled substances, fraud, cyberbullying, missing persons, internal investigations relating to professional standards to name but a few. These cases have not always been limited to the force area and have mandated that I co-operated cross borders with colleagues from other forces and partner organizations.

I have presented my evidential findings numerous times in the form of forensic reports and witness statements that have been used to successfully convict dozens of offenders. I have also attended court and successfully delivered evidence under cross-examination at trial as an expert witness designated by the CPS to successfully secure convictions.

I have extensive live crime scene experience having attended countless search and seizure warrants in the field that have required the on-site triage and preservation of live, case critical evidence in often harsh and potentially hostile situations. This work has furnished me with the necessary skills to confidently direct searches and secure a digital crime scene where volatile data is likely to be present.

In addition to my regular operational duties, I acted as the unit’s single point of contact for the forces MOSOVO (Management of Sexual or Violent Offenders) team dealing with the often complex examination of devices belonging to registered sex offenders on-site and in the lab.

During my time with HTCU I was seconded to the Forensic Capability Network (FCN) where I acted as the principal digital forensic subject matter expert on a project to establish the proof of concept for the automation and validation of forensic tools in line with ISO 17025 requirements and the forensic science regulator's code of practice and conduct.
