About me

I joined UWE in January 2013 after 5 years working in initial teacher education at Bath Spa University. Prior to that, I was a primary school teacher in schools in and around Bristol. I co-ordinate the primary mathematics team and work with pre-service teachers on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

My research interests relate to the role of personality in learning, particularly to how children who are 'quieter' or more introverted and/or more anxious can be supported to benefit from all the learning opportunities available to them in school. I am interested in initial teacher education and particularly how school placements might be enhanced for trainee teachers. I remain interested in mathematical subject knowledge in trainee teachers and how this might be bolstered so that they are able to contribute more fully in teaching sessions. I have written two books aimed at trainee, or early career teachers to support them in their teaching of primary mathematics.

Area of expertise

My doctoral study looked at the role of working memory in children's mathematical learning and specifically explored the possibility that low-tech, low-budget working memory training might support gains in children's mathematical learning.
