About me

I lead the Impact and Engagement Team in RBI. We are responsible for supporting the growth and development of excellent impactful research and knowledge exchange activity across the University.

Prior to joining UWE, I worked as a freelance writer, covering science, technology, health and environment topics for magazines, newspapers and online media around the globe. I've authored six books in popular science, covering topics in food science, the human body and the human microbiome. I've also worked with universities and research councils across the UK to develop successful bids and craft research stories, impact case studies, web content and marketing materials. I've developed successful bids to a variety of funders, including NIHR, BBSRC, Royal Society of Edinburgh and Innovate UK.

Before working as a freelancer, I spent ten years as a conservation biologist. I worked for many years among the grizzlies and wolves of Canada's temperate rainforests leading a research programme on Pacific salmon. I then spent a few years among humphead wrasse in Australia's Coral Sea. These experiences gave me a solid understanding of managing field work, incorporating scientific evidence into policy and, perhaps most importantly, outboard motor repair.
