About me

Having worked in several schools and colleges in the Bristol area as a laboratory technician Ross joined the University in 2005 as an Education Science Technician. During his time, he has increased his student facing role and developed a series of Subject Knowledge Workshops focussing on all aspects of Primary and Secondary Science education. In 2012 he was then appointed as a Senior Technical Instructor in Science Education, primarily working with undergraduate and postgraduate trainee teachers to help them in all aspects of practical science education, from Reception to A-level.

In 2019 Ross was awarded the UWE Students Union, Student Experience Award for Non-Academic staff for his Science Education Workshops and his work with trainee teachers.

During the COVID pandemic and the subsequent shift to develop a hybrid teaching model of online content, Ross developed a series of digital Science Workshops that students could use asynchronously to develop their own subject knowledge while studying an Initial Teacher Training qualification.

In 2023 Ross achieved the status of Fellow (FHEA) for his ongoing teaching and support of trainee teachers.

Ross is now the Technical Team Leader for the School of Education and Childhood, helping to coordinate the technical support for the School and the wider College.

Area of expertise

All aspects of Science Education. Physics, Chemistry and Biology from Early Years to A-level.

I am particularly interested in engaging thinking skills rather than knowledge based learning and I believe that this develops a more rounded and useful understanding of the World around us.

I am also intersted in the use of practical skills and activities within science education and the role of sustainability in education.
