About me

I am an Wallscourt Associate Professor in Digital Manufacturing at the School of Engineering. Prior to this role, I was a Senior Research Fellow, ASTUTE Senior Project Officer, and Additive Manufacturing Technical Manager at the Cardiff University. I am a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE).  I have more than 20 years of experience in Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) and am an expert at developing new and novel uses of this evolving technology.

Area of expertise

I have a wide range of research interests in the field of Additive Manufacturing and beyond including further development of AM processes and materials.

I have been expanding the following main areas of research:

Polymer Additive Manufacturing

  • Selective laser sintering, one of the leading Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes to produce plastic components.  I had 10 years of experience in operating multiple SLS machines – EOS and 3D Systems – whilst offering commercial and contract research projects.
    • My main area of research involves the fundamental and scientific understanding of laser sintering processes, interaction with a range of polymeric materials, manufacturability, dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties.
    • Currently developing smart materials in the context of 4D printing
  • Fused filament fabrication: widely apply this technology to design and fabricate soft elastomers and hard polymers in multi-material fabrication.
    • Recently completed PhD projects used FFF to develop helmet liners integrating with auxetic metamaterials for brain injury prevention
    • Currently developing fluid and gel filled closed cellular structures for impact mitigation, energy absorption and vibration dampening. (WO2017/009646).
    • Antimicrobial 3D printing
  • Resin based printing: the development of deployable and actuation structures

 Metal Additive Manufacturing

  • Selective laser melting, one of the leading Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes to produce metallic components.
    • Published several articles covering a range of metallic alloys and Nano-composite materials intertwined with in-depth analysis of their manufacturability, and sustainability.

New Areas of Additive Manufacturing

  • Ceramic printing: Development of medical ceramic
  • Concrete printing: AM with geopolymer based net zero binder concrete
  • Food Printing: 3D printing of "superfood" for Dysphagia Patients

Medical and Biomedical Additive Manufacturing

  • Collaborator on EPSRC Grant (EP/S014195/1) - Growth and Remodelling in the Porcine Heart-- Pushing Mathematics through Experiments (01 May 2019 - 30 April 2023)

List of current and completed PhD Projects in the past 7 years

  • Authentication in Additive Manufacturing using Surface Mounted Microstructures – Current – Ankit Seal
  • Development of a Viscoelastic Material for Additively Manufactured Enhanced Helmet Liner – Awarded 2022 - Rhosslyn Adams
  • Developing Multi-Material Structures for Enhanced Energy Absorption, for Application to Head Protection - Awarded 2021 - Ben Hanna
  • Developing Novel Materials to Enhance Motorcyclist Safety - Awarded 2020 - Michael Robinson
