About me

I have been Director for the Centre for Research in Biosciences at UWE since 2018. 

I led submissions for biomedical/health sciences for RAE2008, REF2014 and REF2021 for Unit Assessment 3 (UoA3) Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy. I contributed to an Impact Case study submitted for REF2021 and supported the development of further three for UoA3. All were rated 3/4* (internationally excellent/world-leading).

I am leading for UWE our associate membership in the BBSRC funded South West Biosciences 3 Doctoral Training Partnership (SWBio DTP). I am member of the Management group and Implementation Group, involved in all aspects of project and student selection, contributing to the taught first year of the programme with skills training in business and enterprise. 

I am leading the only fully validated PGCert in Genomics for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals programme in England in collaboration with Health Education England Genomic Education Programme (HEE GEP), Macmillan Cancer Support, British Heart Foundation, and Genomics England, Genomics England, NHS England.



 

Area of expertise

Genetic susceptibility to brain injury in newborn infants and pharmacogenetic intervention. The Neonatal Gene Study; the largest multicentre genetic susceptibility study of preterm brain injury in the UK. This study is ongoing and has recruited over 600 infants, linking DNA with functional neurodevelopmental and structural (imaging) outcomes.
Role of glutamete receptors in insulin secretion.
Myosin Va interacting proteins and they role in the regulation of insulin-containing large dense core vesicles.
