About me
Dr Miles Thompson is an Associate Professor in Psychology at UWE Bristol. He is also the lead of the Psychological Sciences Research Group (PSRG).
Miles is a clinical psychologist by background (University of Plymouth), registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council). He worked full-time in the NHS at the Bath Centre for Pain Services from 2005 until 2011. Prior to working at UWE, he gained his PhD from Goldsmiths (University of London) and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University where he became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His main research interests are in psychology and its relationship to social, global and environmental justice and change. Social justice, of course, includes mental health. For Miles, these interests are often approached through the lens of
community, critical community and liberation psychologies.
Miles also remains research active in clinical areas which focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) especially as they apply to chronic pain and related long-term conditions. He also conducts research into the potential reach of ACT in wider "prosocial" areas. Hopefully, you can see the link here to social, global and environmental justice and change as mentioned earlier.
In terms of teaching, Miles currently leads a final year UG module in Psychology and Social Justice. In the past at UWE, he has led a first-year undergraduate module in Interpersonal Psychology and the placement module on the Masters in Health Psychology.
Miles welcomes contact from people interested in his work or working with him. Feel free to get in touch.
