About me
I first studied clinical chemistry in the National Health Service for thirteen years at the Bristol Royal Infirmary before moving to the Institute of Neurology in London to study for a PhD in neuro-immunology, investigating antibody affinity in the CSF of patients with multiple sclerosis. I started at the University of the West of England in 1993 and focused my research in the area of developing new rapid detection technologies for point of care diagnostics, environmental analysis, food safety and homeland defence applications. I have over 70 publications, research papers, books and book chapters; a list can be seen on Google Scholar:
I am the co-founder of the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology which works strongly with industry to develop opportunities for funding industrial/academic R&D opportunities. This was launched in 2008 and has since developed a network of over 800 companies. http://www.biosensingtech.co.uk/
I am the founder, organiser and conference chair for the International conference of Bio-sensing Technology. This is a major international conference with global attendance and underwritten by Elsevier. Industry engagement
Throughout my career in the academic sector I have sought to engage and work with industry, specialising in seeking to build links between industry and academia.
I initiated the development and launch of MediLink SW, which launched in April 2012. I am currently Chair of the Board of Directors. MediLink SW is a trade organisation that supports companies in the biomedical and biotech sectors in the South West of England by running networking events, workshops and offering a range of business support products. http://www.medilinksw.com/
Immunoassay development
One area of research that has been particularly successful is the development of magnetic detection technology for use in immunoassays. Using this technology a magnetic-biosensor has been developed that will perform an assay in three minutes or less. A new company has been formed to commercialise the technology – Miatech Biosolutions Ltd for which I am CSO.
Knowledge Exchange
I have organised many workshops and KE events and developed the Biomedical iNet which launched in September 2010 and has been successful in supporting innovation in companies in the Southwest of England. Following on from the iNet I launched a Business Technology Centre (BTC) for monitoring biological cell system. This launched early in 2013 and supports industry and product development by facilitating access to new technology and academic know-how. http://www.catim.co.uk/
