About me

I worked for consulting engineers before joining academia, and I am now Professor of Transport Engineering and Deputy Director of the Centre for Transport and Society. I have written the definitive book about 'Designing for cycle traffic'.

Area of expertise

I have been involved in all stages of the promotion of transport schemes including policy formulation, modelling and forecasting, operational analysis and economic appraisal, design and construction, and evaluation. I have experience across all modes of transport and have a particular specialism in cycling.

I lead teams undertaking quantitative and qualitative empirical research and evaluations of sustainable transport schemes and autonomous vehicle trials. My work explores the links between infrastructure design and user behaviour. A specialism is street design, with emphasis on active modes, and growing considerations for micro-mobility and also autonomous vehicles. Research includes e-scooter safety, side road crossing user behaviour, eye movement of cyclists; passing distances; pedestrian and cyclists trust in autonomous vehicles real-world trials. I have been involved in writing Designing for cycle traffic, DMRB CD195, Local Transport Note 1/20, the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans Technical Guidance, and the forthcoming Manual for Streets 3.
