About me

Alex Franklin is a Senior Lecturer in Visual Culture. She teaches across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Bristol School of Art and Design and is a PhD supervisor. She is a member of both the Visual Culture Research Group (VCRG) and Gender & Culture Research Group at UWE, a member of The Keele Centre for Ageing Research (KCAR), and a Research Associate of the Institute for LGBT Studies, University of Arizona. She is an editor of the international, peer-reviewed journal Clothing Cultures [Intellect] - having previously been an editor of Taylor &Francis' Journal of Gender Studies - and is a book proposal reviewer for Routledge, Berg and Intellect.

Alex's research interests span material, popular and visual cultures, identity theory, andragogy and social justice. Her research currently has two foci: ageing identities and social exclusion - specifically the impact of design practices on the embodied experience of the older consumer; and the role that art and design education plays in both creating and countering social inequalities.

Alex is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and member of the British Society of Gerontology. Her book, Ageing by design: women, ageing and dress [Emerald], is due out in 2021.
