About me
Dr Alex Scher-Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England, where he has served as Programme Leader for Digital Marketing since 2021.
His research focuses on emerging practices in service marketing, with particular interests in social robotics, human–computer interaction, technology adoption and the broader impact of digital technologies on consumer behaviour. His work explores areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning applications, digital consumption, service innovation, customer engagement in automated service environments and technology-mediated service interactions. Additional research interests include chatbots in digital marketing, the Internet of Things, smart device applications, social media adoption and technology consumption.
Dr Scher-Smith's research has been presented at leading international and domestic conferences, and has attracted funding and support from organisations including the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust and the Academy of Marketing.
He holds a PhD in Marketing from Henley Business School, University of Reading, where his doctoral research examined the adoption of social robots in service contexts. He was awarded a fully funded scholarship to undertake his doctoral studies. He also holds an MSc in Digital Marketing with Distinction from Henley Business School, University of Reading, and a BA (Hons) in Television Production with First Class Honours from Bournemouth University. In addition, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA).
Prior to joining UWE Bristol, Dr Scher-Smith lectured in Marketing at the University of Reading from 2018. He has extensive experience in higher education and specialises in mixed-methods research, with particular expertise in quantitative analysis through employing Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), SPSS, and SmartPLS.
Before entering academia, Dr Scher-Smith worked across the media and marketing industries, with professional experience spanning Europe and East Asia.
Dr Scher-Smith actively supervises doctoral, postgraduate and undergraduate research projects and welcomes enquiries from prospective doctoral research students with interests aligned to his areas of expertise.
