About me
As a professor, my main focus is on research and research leadership and
supervision. I am currently Director of Studies for 4 PhD students and
supervise 2 others. I was the co-ordinator for the AHRC-funded 3D3 (Digital
Design, Arts and Media) Centre for Doctoral Training, a partnership with
Plymouth and Falmouth and negotiated UWE's membership of the South, West and Wales 2 Doctoral Training Partnership.. I am also Programme Leader for the Masters in
Research (MRes: Culture) and the REF 2021 Unit of Assessment Leader for Unit

research interests in the cultural and creative industries. My particular focus
and expertise is in the following areas: British cinema and television; the
construction of masculinities; film noir, stars and stardom (and celebrity
culture); and media production cultures, especially the role of the film
producer. I have led several research projects, the current one being an
investigation of the film and television industries in Bristol. I am also
currently working on a monograph: ‘Sean Connery: Stardom and National Identity,
to be published by Manchester University Press.
