About me

Andrew Batchelor MEng (DIC) MA (RCA) PGCertHE MIED

Drew graduated with a MEng in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London in 2000 with First class honours. Followed by an MA in Industrial Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art, with support from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. He is a member of the Institute of Engineering Designers and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Drew is Associate Head of Department for Design and Technology Cluster in Architecture and the Built Environment at UWE with responsibility for ~30 staff and ~500 students on the following programmes:

MSc Façade Engineering.

MSc Building Information Modelling.

MSc/Grad Dip Building Surveying.

BSc Building Surveying.

BSc Architecture Technology and Design.

BA Interior Architecture.

BEng Building Services Engineering.

BA Product Design (formally Creative Product Design).

Design and Architecture Foundation Year.

Drew worked for 2 years as a research associate at the Royal College of Art, developing a scooter as a mobility aid for amputees. He has accrued 7 years of professional practice working as a product designer & mechanical engineer. With projects including bicycle design, electrical product design, wearables, office furniture and lighting. With a wide range of design activities: pitching, project planning and management, prototyping, design detailing, styling, design for manufacture, user centred design and eco-design. At BNFL / Magnox Generation Drew worked in remote operations, designing and engineering inspection cameras and a sampling machine to operate in the reactor core.

Drew's connection with the construction industry started at a young age, Much of his childhood was spent on building sites, first with a self-build house in Hertfordshire, then restoring a 300 year old manor house in Somerset and finally another self-build family home.

​Drew joined UWE as a full time university lecturer in 2007. He has taught on most modules in Product Design, including being programme leader for both Product Design programmes from 2012-15. His teaching responsibilities this year include;
