About me

Ben Young co-leads BA Filmmaking at UWE_FILM and teaches film narrative and production to its undergraduates, integrating his research practice as a writer, director, and producer across fiction features, series, and documentary. His 2015 feature 'Blood Cells' premiered at the Venice Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival ahead of worldwide release through Picturehouse and Netflix. His documentary 'Tony Fraginals' will soon premiere in competition at DOK Leipzig, IDFA and LSFF ahead of its North American premiere and wider festival run, and he currently has a drama series in development with Channel 4 and Warp Films.

With a background that extends from theatre to advertising to the speechwriting trenches of national political campaigns, he previously taught creative writing at Oxford University and filmmaking at Teesside University. He is a graduate of Goldsmiths College and the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, and he has served as a guest lecturer in filmmaking at the Beijing Film Academy, Hebei Normal University, the Communication University of China, and Guangxi Arts Institute. To date Ben's research practice has been supported by the BFI, Creative Europe MEDIA, Creative England, the British Council, Northern Film and Media, PACT, EAVE, the Danish Film Institute, the Netherlands Film Fund, and the Biennale. He is a member of the Biennale College, EAVE, and Rotterdam Lab.
