About me

I am Beth Benker, and I am a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and the Programme Lead for the Foundation Year in Health and Social Sciences.

My interests are firmly rooted in food - particularly food and gender within the contemporary dynamic of commodified and distanced food (i.e., what effect are supermarkets and food advertisments having?). My research also looks at sustainability - how the effects of distancing and advertising interacts with sustainability, and what effect this might have on the environment on a national, and therefore global, scale.

I also have a blog, which you can find here: https://boomblog.food.blog

My most recent publication is on stockpiling during the COVID-related lockdown in the U.K.:
Benker, B. (2020) 'Stockpiling as Resilience: Defending and Contextualising Extra Procurement During Lockdown'
