About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Education at UWE Bristol, working across both  PGCE and undergraduate programmes in Primary Initial Teacher Education (ITE). I contribute to the English and Professional Learning teams, and I bring a strong early years perspective to my teaching. I also support student learning through a range of online programmes and use my qualification as a coach to embed a coaching approach throughout my work.

Before joining UWE, I spent 15 years as a teacher, literacy lead, and senior leader in Bristol schools, working across the age ranges. During this time, I developed a particular passion for teaching in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and early literacy. I then worked for eight years as a Teaching and Learning Consultant for the Local Education Authority in Bristol, supporting teachers in developing their teaching of reading, writing, and oracy.

My MA studies at University College London (UCL) sparked a research interest in how teachers understand and teach reading. My dissertation explored how educators develop their perceptions of reading pedagogy, and this continues to inform my academic work.

I am passionate about inclusive education, curriculum development, and supporting student teachers to become reflective, research-informed practitioners. I regularly collaborate with schools and educational organisations across the region and contribute to curriculum innovation and professional development initiatives.

Area of expertise

I am passionate about the teaching of reading particularly early reading. I uphold the belief that all children can learn to read with the appropriate support and approach.

I practice a trauma informed approach to my work and this is a particular area of interest for me.
