About me

After over 20 years in higher education I am now retired. However, I still advise former colleagues on research issues. My  background is psychology (University of London) and Industrial Psychology (University of Hull) with commercial research practice having worked full-time on both sides of the research fence - for research agencies and a client organisation. I have practitioner and academic research expertise and I have worked in industry for three research agencies and on the client side with a major international company as well as, thereafter, being retained for long terms by global organisations and most recently TNS (a London based research agency). As a practitioner I have designed and managed surveys as well as, field and laboratory experiments in 27 countries across Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America and the Far East. This has involved conventional research techniques and the development of new research methods to evaluate products and communications in the field and in laboratories, using reported behaviour and objective measures. I have  fulfilled a number of roles at the University.  In addition to teaching and research supervision, I have served as Director of Postgraduate Studies in the Business School, Communications Director for the Business School and Head of the School of Marketing. Whilst at the university I have carried out ad hoc consultancy for blue chip companies and clients in the public sector. These include the Wellcome Trust, Barclays Bank,  The National Lottery, Channel 4 TV,  Christian Dior, Wessex Water, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and the NFU (Associa),   I have been awarded a number of best paper prizes and published extensively on research methodology, consumer behaviour and influencing behaviour.
I was a Member of the Centre for the Study of Behaviour Change and Influence. I continued to act as an External Examiner on PhDs, most recently at Manchester Business School and Cardiff Business School. I am now retired.
Recent research projects include research on care for the elderly, an evaluation of online access panels, a survey of the public's opinions to and behaviour with regard to 20mph speed limits, attitudes to and behaviour related to cycling and various opinion polling projects for a charity.
