About me

My first full-time job was on a livestock farm in Kent, then as a land surveyor for a construction company. Since graduating in psychology, I have worked in industry for three research agencies and on the client side with a major international company for five years as well as, thereafter, being retained for long terms by global organisations in various industries.  As a practitioner I have designed and managed surveys as well as field and laboratory experiments globally. This has involved conventional research techniques and the development of new research methods. I have fulfilled several roles at the University.  In addition to teaching and research supervision, I have served as Director of Postgraduate Studies in the Business School, Communications Director for the Business School and Head of the School of Marketing. Whilst at the university I have carried out ad hoc consultancy for blue chip companies and clients in the public sector. These include the Wellcome Trust, Barclays Bank, The National Lottery, Channel 4 TV, Christian Dior, Wessex Water, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and Public Health England.   I have been awarded a number of best paper prizes and published extensively on research methodology and influencing behaviour.

I was a Member of the Centre for the Study of Behaviour Change and Influence. I am now retired but still involved in UWE research projects on health and safety. Recent research projects include research on care for the elderly, an evaluation of online access panels, a survey of the public's opinions to and behaviour with regard to 20mph speed limits, attitudes to and behaviour related to cycling and various opinion polling projects for a charity. I have been a trustee for two wildlife charities for 17 years and a wildlife volunteer in Wales and England.
