About me

I am keen on all things technical, particularly when it impacts the delivery of legal service/justice, or my students' experience. I am interested in client-centred, technology enhanced design of legal services, processes and products. I am keen on the transfer of good practice from one area to another entirely unrelated one, and on putting together inter-disciplinary teams for intersectional research and collaboration. I am currently involved in a number of potential KTP leads around legal services and product design, in particular using technology, and the move of law firms from service provider to include also development and provision of related products. I am funded by UWE's VC for a project researching the adoption (or not) of technology by regional SME legal services providers and actual development of a prototype algorithm as part of a cross-university team of researchers. I am also representing UWE as a founding member of the BristolLegalTech initiative. I work closely with a number of external stakeholders across Bristol and the City region.

After gaining my Law Degree in Germany, I qualified as a solicitor in E&W in 1997 and practised Corporate Law both in the City of London (Slaughter and May) and in Bristol (Osborne Clarke) before I joined UWE as a lecturer. I was the programme head of the Legal Practice Course at UWE's Bristol Institute of Legal Practice and Associate Head of the Institute for three years, essentially managing the LPC programme delivery and fulfilling executive duties at the Institute. I was Director of Academic Law from 2014 to 2019, leading the UG and PG Law programmes within the Faculty of Business and Law as a member of UWE Law School's senior excutive. This role gradually evolved into UWE's lead of Legal Technology and as such I am currently focussing on leading and researching innovation, enterprise and technology within the professional services sector. I am co-founder of Bristol+BathLegalTech, and regularly tweet on @dagmarsteffens, and blog on, about innovation in legal services.
