About me

Elena Marco is an architect, educator, practitioner, researcher, senior manager and academic leader with a diverse and rich profile, building a top-class reputation for the third largest Department of Architecture and the Built Environment in the UK, at the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol, which she leads. As Head of a large and diverse Department with an array of modes of delivery, she values the challenges involved in creating conditions for a high-quality student and staff experience. Her multi-disciplinary Department has over 100 staff and 50 associate lecturers from across 20 different professions spanning a wide range of industries, where 2500 students are taught across architecture, product design and built environment subjects. She has a proven experience of leadership and management at UWE with the ability to successfully lead, motivate and manage multi-skilled and diverse groups of staff and to build effective teams and stakeholder networks.  Her passion, energy and hands-on approach, combined with excellent communication skills, have helped to make her Department become the best performing Department in the University. She has developed a clear and strong strategy that focuses on promoting an inter-disciplinary approach to professional and research-led scholarship in all her practice-orientated programmes, to enable the Department to educate the next generation of built environment leaders. Her strong leadership has placed the Department within the best 20 schools of Architecture and Building in the country, as well as creating a diverse workforce that shows the construction industry how to lead. Since she took up her position she has doubled the proportion of female staff from 18% to 43%, and she is working towards achieving a 50% - 50% split by 2025, compared with the current industry ratio of 13% women to 87% men.  Elena built a strong profile in sustainable design at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, working on many pioneering and award-winning projects, some as part of Europe-wide research initiatives.

Area of expertise

Elena's main area of expertise is the symbiosis between architecture, health and sustainability.  She has been a Principal Investigator on research projects exploring "Space in the Sustainable & Healthy Home" and "Sustainable Behaviours in the Home", as well as a CEBE funded Learning & Teaching project on "Introducing Health as a Driver for Sustainability in the Architectural Curriculum" which was identified by UKRC as one of their "Big ideas for the future".

She has experience of successfully engaging communities in live research projects.  The direction of her future research is likely to involve exploring how clutter, consumerism and utilitarian objects can influence sustainable behaviour.
