About me

I joined the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) in 2023. Before that, I was an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at Birzeit University and an Associate Researcher at Bauhaus University Weimar. I have also held visiting research positions at KU Leuven and the University of Tokyo.

My research focuses on performance-based earthquake engineering, seismic evaluation and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures, and uncertainty and sensitivity studies in advanced structural design. I also investigate the thermal and structural behaviour of RC elements exposed to fire.

I lead Coolscapes: co-learning across cultures in a warming city, a project that explores sustainable and climate-responsive design for resilience and comfort. I have been awarded DAAD and DFG research grants, developed a Structural Mechanics Laboratory, and contributed to establishing the master’s programme in Civil Engineering at Birzeit University.

I serve as a Guest Editor for Buildings and Frontiers in Built Environment, and regularly review for international journals in structural and civil engineering. My work aims to improve the resilience and sustainability of the built environment while promoting equity and inclusion in STEM.

Area of expertise

Structural analysis and design, performance-based seismic design, retrofit of buildings, structural fire engineering, sustainable structural design, structural health monitoring, machine learning applications in structural engineering, uncertainty, sensitivity and reliability analyses in structural engineering.
