About me

I have been working in academic development since 1996 when I managed the UK-wide 'Earth Sciences Staff Development' project for 4 years. At the end of its funding, this project segued into the HEA Subject Centre for Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences for which I became Assistant Director. In 2007, I had the opportunity to move to the USA where I worked as an independent consultant for various projects in the UK and internationally. On my return in 2010, I took on the role of Senior Adviser (Evidence-informed Practice) at the HEA for a short while before settling at the University of Bath as Head of Academic Staff Development. This role expanded my experience from learning & teaching development to include researcher development. In 2016 I took a career development move to HEFCE (now the Office for Students) where I was a Senior HE Policy Adviser in the Learning & Teaching team (working on links with the HEA including the NTFS, Learning Gain, HESA teaching qualifications data and the Catalyst B innovation projects). I was delighted to take up the exciting new role of Associate Director of Academic Practice at UWE Bristol in January 2018. Unsurprisingly, I have a particular interest in personal & professional development of staff in higher education and my research focus has moved towards reframing models of 'expertise' to provide an alternative perspective on 'excellence' in academic practice.

I hold a National Teaching Fellowship (2006), Senior Fellowship of SEDA (2006) and am a Principal Fellow of the HEA (2017). I'm also a Girl Guide leader, off-road runner, singer and nascent banjo player.
