About me

I specialise in working as a music therapist with Autistic people, from a Neurodiversity affirmative perspective, and am also currently working on a PhD on this topic (at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, funded by the Guildhall EDI in Music Therapy Studentship). Alongside my work as a Senior Lecturer at UWE, I work as a guest lecturer and dissertation supervisor on the MA in Music Therapy course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I have presented my research at a number of conferences including the British Association of Music Therapy, European Music Therapy Confederation and World Congress of Music Therapy conferences.

I have also worked in a variety of other settings as a music therapist, including schools, care homes and hospices. I am the founder and co-ordinator of the BAMT (British Association of Music Therapy) Support Network for Disabled Music Therapists.

Prior to training as a music therapist, I taught flute, violin and piano for over a decade, and also worked as a performing musician with various ensembles.

Area of expertise

My main area of expertise is in developing a neurodiversity-affirmative perspective towards music therapy practice with Autistic people, which I focus on both through my research and my music therapy practice.

My other research interests include music therapy / disability arts with adults with complex needs / PMLD, and the lived experience of disabled music therapists. I have been conducting some research in collaboration with Beth Pickard on the lived experiences of disabled music therapists in the UK.

I am interested in intersectional, anti-oppressive approaches to music therapy, as well as perspectives from disability arts, critical disability studies and critical autism studies.
