About me

I am a Consultant Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology with a specialist research and clinical interest in the Systemic Vasculitides, specifically ANCA-associated vasculitis and Giant Cell Arteritis, in particular, patient focused research and outcome measures.

Area of expertise

I am leading the international development of a patient reported outcome measure for ANCA associated vasculitis (the AAV PRO) which I successfully presented for endorsement at the 2016 Outcome Measurement in Rheumatology (OMERACT) conference, on behalf of the Vasculitis Working Group. I also have funding to develop a PRO for patients with GCA, starting January 2017.

I am the steering committee chair of the American College of Rheumatology/ European League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) Diagnostic and Classification Criteria for Primary Systemic Vasculitis (DCVAS) study and a steering committee member of the UKIVAS registry study.

Co-applicant on a Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) grant, which defined the risk of developing aortic aneurysms and cardiovascular disease in patients with temporal arteritis and have led the analysis of damage over long-term follow up in the ANCA associated vasculitides.

The Academic Rheumatology unit at the University of the West of England is based in the Bristol Royal Infirmary, a multidisciplinary, research intensive environment addressing patient perspectives, self-management, fatigue and patient reported outcome measures in inflammatory disease, with a strong history of patient involvement. This group comprises a range of disciplines, utilises the full range of methodological approaches and offers a critical mass of researchers physically located together providing interaction and support. The Academic Unit is directly adjacent to and fully interactive with the clinical rheumatology service, and is a collaboration between the University of the West of England, University Hospitals Bristol (UHBristol) NHS Trust and the University of Bristol. Rheumatology and musculoskeletal disease are the key areas in the Complex and Long Term Healthcare research theme at UWE, within the Centre for Health and Clinical Research.

I run a dedicated clinic for patients with Connective Tissue Diseases and Vasculitis, at UHBristol, which receives tertiary referrals and recruits patients into research studies. I am a member of the regional CTD network.
