About me
With over 30 years’ experience in the chemical sciences, Dr Kevin Honeychurch has advanced electrochemical, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry methodologies for the detection of drugs, toxins, and trace analytes in both environmental and biological systems. His recent nationally recognised work on the chemical behaviour of GBL and GHB in beverages, along with their rapid detection using smartphone‑based computer vision, was featured by the BBC and demonstrates his commitment to developing accessible analytical solutions with real‑world impact. Earlier in his career, he pioneered mercury‑free electrochemical methods for quantifying heavy metals through the use of novel screen‑printed electrodes.
Ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally in his field, Dr Honeychurch’s career spans both industry and academia, delivering chemistry‑driven innovations across healthcare, food security, environmental sustainability, and forensic science. He has authored more than 75 peer‑reviewed publications, presented at an equivalent number of conferences, and maintains an H‑index of 32, with over 3,350 citations and an i10‑index of 58. His work is consistently among the most accessed within his faculty, and he contributes actively to law enforcement through expert‑witness testimony and professional consultancy. He is also a committed member of the Institute for Biosensing Technology, supporting knowledge exchange and evidence‑based policy development.
Dr Honeychurch is currently serving as Editor of the Special Issue on “The Use of Smartphones in Analytical Chemistry” for the journal Sci (MDPI), further reflecting his leadership in the emerging field of mobile and accessible analytical technologies. This role complements his research focus on transforming ubiquitous devices, such as smartphones, into powerful tools for forensic, clinical, and environmental analysis.
Dedicated to public engagement, widening participation, and global collaboration, Dr Honeychurch actively contributes to STEM outreach and international research partnerships that enhance the University’s profile and societal impact. His current work centres on the development of innovative analytical technologies designed to protect communities, support justice, and contribute to a safer and more sustainable future.
