About me

Dr Kiran Tota-Maharaj is the Head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE Bristol). Dr Tota-Maharaj is a Chartered Engineer and a corporate member of the Society of Environmental Engineers, UK, CEng and Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), a professional engineer through the Society of Professional Engineers, UK, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a member of The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK.

He is the author/co-author of over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. He is on the Journal Editorial Board for (i) International Journal of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (IJWREE); (ii) Water Journal (WJ); (iii) International Journal of Sustainable Water and Environmental Systems (SWES), (iv) International Water Technology Journal (IWTJ). He is a Journal Technical Review Member for (i) Science of the Total Environment, (ii) Chemosphere and (iii) The West Indian Journal of Engineering.

Dr Tota-Maharaj has a research team of six PhD students funded by various sources (industry, academia and engineering consultancies)

Area of expertise

Wastewater Treatment Using Microbial Fuel Cells with bioelectricity production; Performance of granular-bed anaerobic baffled reactor (GRABBR) treating municipal and industrial wastewater and generating biogas; Developing Novel Photocatalytic Concrete for Depollution of Contaminants and Impurities within Urban Cities; Applications of Solar Photo-Fenton (Advanced Oxidation Processes) for the degradation of contaminants in municipal wastewater; Ultrasonic treatment for microbiological control of water systems; Forward osmosis and osmotic processes for water and wastewater treatment; Membrane bioreactors (MBR) and combining membrane processes such as nanofiltration and ultrafiltration for municipal and wastewater treatment; Renewable Energy in Water and Wastewater Treatment Applications; Green Infrastructure (permeable pavements, engineered wetlands).
