About me

I joined UWE as an Associate Director of Academic Practice in May 2018 having previously been an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Reading, where I had had opportunities to undertake two secondments to the University's academic development unit, and I was also the School Director of Learning and Teaching for the School of Law.

Prior to becoming an academic, I spent some years practising as a banking solicitor in the City, and I have retained an interest in ensuring that students leave university with strong employability skills and in designing effective and interesting programmes whilst complying with any stipulations of the relevant professional statutory and regulatory bodies.

I have a strong interest in inclusivity and wellbeing, and how these are embedded in the curriculum (including the assessment regime).  This is reflected in my current research projects.  I am co-lead for UWE on a QAA Collaborative Enhancement Project with three other Universities on "Making the Language of Assessment Inclusive" and have led the UWE contribution to a second QAA Collaborative Enhancement Project on "Embedding Inclusive Assessment" led by Teesside University.  Much of my work at UWE is centered around projects and initiatives aimed at reducing awarding gaps.

For the past four years I have been academic lead for the Festival of Learning - our flagship learning and teaching event for the University each June, which is also attended and well regarded by external delegates.

I am also an experienced External Examiner, and have a strong interest in consistency of standards across HEIs.  I have undertaken Advance HE's Professional Development Course for External Examiners and am also now on the Advance HE list of accredited facilitators for the course.

When not at work, I can often be found sewing, knitting, crocheting, reading or doing crosswords.  I should probably try to be found more often on the golf course or running.

Area of expertise

Inclusivity and Wellbeing within the Curriculum, Inclusive Assessment and Feedback, Academic Standards, Vocational and Academic Law programme design.
