About me
Leona (Zijie) Huang is a Lecturer of Cyber Security at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).
Her research interest widely lies at the intersection of AI, Computer Networks, and Sociology, with a coherent focus on shaping next-generation communication systems. She investigates Network and Service Orchestration by developing federated and intent-based mechanisms that enable resilient, adaptive service delivery across cloud-native and edge environments. Building on this foundation, she integrates principles of Trustworthy and Responsible AI, ensuring that such systems are explainable, fair, and aligned with human-centred values, thereby fostering transparency and trust. At the same time, she addresses Sustainability in Future Networks by modelling the environmental impact of large-scale telecom infrastructure and designing energy-efficient AI solutions to reduce consumption in RAN and data centres. These technical directions are further informed by her work on Sociotechnical Futures, where she examines how network technologies interact with societal needs, policy frameworks, and ethical considerations, using participatory approaches to support inclusive and responsible innovation. She aims to bridge cutting-edge research and real-world deployment, ensuring that future communication networks are not only intelligent and efficient, but also sustainable, trustworthy, and human-centric.
Prior to joining UWE in 2026, she worked at the University of Bristol, Canter for Sociodigital Futures, as a Senior Research Associate in High Performance Network. She completed her PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of Bristol, and obtained B.Eng. from Fujian Normal University, China in 2020.
